PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology in which a single side scanning mode and a dual side scanning mode are selectively switched, an adverse effect on picture is prevented even in the dual side scanning mode, and gradation is excellently reproduced in an image forming apparatus in which a latent image is formed by scanning a spot in a main scanning direction with an oscillating deflection mirror on a latent image carrier driven in a subscanning direction. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus which reproduces the graduation with a single line screen comprises: a latent image carrier the surface of which is driven in the subscanning direction; a latent image forming means which reflects a light beam emitted from a light source with an oscillating deflection mirror, scans a spot in a main scanning direction substantially orthogonal to the subscanning direction on the surface of the latent image carrier and forms the latent image; and a scanning mode control means which selectively switches the single side scanning mode in which the spot is scanned only in the first direction of the main scanning direction on the surface of the latent image carrier and the dual side scanning mode in which the spot is scanned both in the first direction and the second direction which is reversed from the first direction. The image forming apparatus is characterized in that the angle between the respective lines of the single line screen and the subscanning direction is smaller in the dual side scanning mode than in the single side scanning mode.
