A filtering method for image pixels is provided to filter pixels of a block boundary area based on at least one of motion vector data, transform coefficient data and encoding type data, thereby realizing real time processing and removing blocking and ring phenomena in the boundary area for guaranteeing high screen quality of compressed motion pictures. A method for filtering image pixels includes the steps of obtaining motion vector data, transform coefficient data, and encoding type data for a block adjacent to a block boundary, and determining to carry out filtering for the block boundary area based on at least one of the data. In the second step, motion vectors of two blocks adjacent to the block boundary are compared with each other and a difference therebetween is obtained. The transform coefficient data is determined to include non-zero transform coefficient data or not. The encoding type is determined to be intra encoding type or inter encoding type. Filtering degree is determined on the bases of the motion vector data, the transform coefficient data, and the encoding type data.
