A backlight unit, a method for driving the same, and an LCD having the same are provided to independently operate at least two display areas of an LCD panel, by independently driving at least two light source parts of the LCD. A backlight unit comprises at least one LCD panel(10) and at least two light source parts(60,70), wherein the LCD panel has at least two display areas(A,B). Each light source part has at least two light sources, which are connected to each other in series. The light source parts are connected to each other in parallel. A light source selecting part(50) selects at least one of the light source parts. A signal controller controls the light source selecting part.
