PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control a signal reproducing apparatus so as to be quickly ready for reproduction by shortening a period in which a reproduced signal is saturated at the time of recovering from exception handling. SOLUTION: A variable amplifying part 2 amplifies a reproduced input signal SI in accordance with given gain G and outputs it. A control value calculating part 20 calculates a control value CV for setting gain G from an output signal SO of the variable amplifying part 2. A control part 8 sets the gain G in accordance with this control value CV and gives it to the variable amplifying part 2. A defect detecting part 11 sends a detection signal SD to the control part 8 when occurrence of defect detection is detected. During output of the detection signal SD, a control means 10 in exception handling of the control part 8 fixes the gain G to the prescribed value, or limits it so as not to increase.
