The apparatus has a cylindrical housing (10) moveable up and down within the bore hole and containing a detector (20) for incident radiation arranged decentrally in the housing. A lead screen (21) surrounds the detector and has a window for direction selective reception of the radiation. The azimuthal angle of the window relative to the borehole wall is variable. The detector is adjacent the window and the shield and detector are rotatable together about the housing axis. Independent claims also cover a method of carrying out measurements.
