The procedure for renovating a railway points frog made from austenitic steel with a high manganese content consists of recharging a worn or cracked zone by arc welding, using steel containing 12 - 19 per cent by weight of manganese, 2.5 - 4.5 per cent nickel and less than 0.8 per cent carbon. The replacement steel is deposited in a transverse bead while keeping the temperature of the frog below about 100 degrees C adjacent to the weld and limiting the added energy to 20 kilojoules per cm of deposited bead. After welding the renovated zone is machined to its original dimensions.
|
