A method for searching files and managing a file database in a multimedia device is provided to offer a function for managing access/file list of multimedia files, checking the file database, and performing backup of the file database in the multimedia device, and quickly search the file by using a file database list structure when file access is requested. If a file search command is inputted from a user, a directory corresponding to a filename path of the requested file in a GUI(Graphic User Interface) is searched from the file database(S202). If the directory is searched from the file database, the file having position information corresponding to a filename position of the requested file in the GUI is searched from the files included in the searched directory(S204). A physical file is accessed by using the searched file information(S206). The file database includes checksum information, the number of all files, the number of all directories, and the file information corresponding to the number of all files. The file information includes a filename for each directory in the database, directory name/date/time/size/position, a media file name/ID, and a previous/next file database pointer.
