PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for completing read out of a document in a short time while minimizing damage on the document without requiring intricate operation even when a document which cannot pass through a document feeder easily is included in documents for reading out an image. SOLUTION: The document reader comprises a document feeder, a document mounting table, a read mode control section for selecting any one of a feeding document reading mode for reading the image of a document fed by means of the document feeder or a fixed document reading mode for reading the image of a document mounted on the document mounting table, and a section for generating an event signal after the processing for reading out the document in the feeding document reading mode is started wherein the control section performs processing for reading out at least the immediately subsequent document in a reading mode different from the feeding document reading mode in response to a generated event signal.
