<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device capable of providing a stereoscopic picture for an observer both, when it is arranged long in the vertical direction and when it is arranged long in the horizontal direction. <P>SOLUTION: The picture display device 1 is equipped with a retardation plate 6, including polarization control areas 6a and 6b to change the axis of polarization of light irradiated from a back light 2, and a polarization control liquid crystal panel 7, including polarization control areas 7a and 7b to separate the light radiated from the back light 2 to at least two light beams having different axes of polarization. The retardation plate 6 provides a stereoscopic image for the observer 10 with the light passing through the polarization control area 6b, in such a state that a display panel 3 is arranged long in the vertical direction, and the polarization control liquid crystal panel 7 provides the stereoscopic image for the observer 10 with the light passing through the polarization control area 7b, in such a state that the display panel 3 is arranged long in the horizontal direction.
