Class 94 (2) In a machine for making block - bottomed bags, a flattened paper tube 1 with the bottom portion 2 bent at a right angle, is fed in a sideways direction between suction nozzles 3 which open the bottom portion to allow a spreader finger 4 rotating on a shaft 28 to enter the bottom and open it still further. Oppositely rotating formers 5 then engage the opened bottom and partially form and flatten the bottom flaps during the sideways travel of the tube 1. Pairs of sprockets or pulleys 9, 10, carry pairs of endless chains or belts 11, 12, pairs of folding fingers 13, 14, being pivotally mounted at predetermined points on the chains or belts. The folding fingers are attached to levers 15, 16 provided with rollers 17 which run in guide ways 18 in rails 19. the guide ways being curved at 20 and 21 to impart a swinging movement to the fingers 13, 14, which enter into the open bottom flaps, pull them into shape, and form the creases of the bag bottom as the tube 1 is being conveyed' to further devices for finishing the bag bottom. To adjust the machine for other paper tube sizes, distance sleeves 24 may be exchanged for others of suitable length, and the distance between the leading and trailing pairs of folding fingers may also be adjusted. The leading fingers 13 are pivotally secured to the inner chains 11, 12, and the trailing fingers 14 are pivotally secured to the outer chains and the adjustment is made by changing the relative positions of the chains. |
