PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of speedily obtaining both visible image information and infrared image information of a document with a simple configuration through single-time vertical scanning. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with: a visible lighting device which emits visible light; an infrared lighting device which emits infrared light; a plurality of arrays of linear photoelectric converting elements which have different spectral sensitivity characteristics of the visible range and infrared range and are extended in a horizontal scanning direction; an imaging optical system which images image information of a document, lit up by the visible lighting device and infrared lighting device and placed on an original platen, on the linear photoelectric converting elements; and a driving means of moving optical relative positions of the imaging optical system and document in the vertical scanning direction. Then the illuminating operations of the visible lighting device and infrared lighting device are controlled for every time when a single read is made in the horizontal scanning direction and the imaging optical system and document are optically and relatively moved once in the vertical scanning direction, thereby obtaining the visible image information and the infrared image information of the document.
