A channel searching method of a set top box is provided to designate a channel search field to the protocol structure of the existing set top box. A ground wave tuner is installed at the inside of a set top box(100). A TS(Transport Stream) and a command are transmitted to a receiver(300) through the IEEE 1394(200). The receiver transmits a command to the set top box. In a system that the set top box and the receiver is interfaced with the IEEE 1394, commands such as "channel search start and stop", "channel search progress and channel search completion, channel map" are added to the protocol of the set top box. The receiver performs a channel search start, stop and channel map requests. The set top box increases the physical channel when starting the channel search, performs PAT(Program Association Table) and PMT(Program Map Table) parsing among the PSI(Program Structure Information) and stores two-part channel information in an inside channel map.
