An apparatus and a method for controlling an active cycle of a semiconductor memory are provided to improve operation speed and to reduce current consumption by preventing an unnecessary asynchronous active cycle, using setup time. In an apparatus for controlling an active cycle of a semiconductor memory supporting a synchronous mode and an asynchronous mode, an operation mode control unit(100) outputs an operation mode judging signal by judging the operation mode of the semiconductor memory according to a clock. An active control unit(200) controls the output of an active signal to proceed the active cycle of a corresponding operation mode according to the operation mode judging signal.
