PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To bring the edge face of a steel piece into contact with an electrode part without bringing the electrode part into contact with the label applied to the edge face of the steel piece. SOLUTION: This magnetic powder flaw detector for inspecting the surface flaw of the steel piece 10 is constituted so that a current is passed across a pair of electrode parts 40 and 40 which hold the steel piece 10 not only to magnetize the steel piece 10 but also to sprinkle a magnetic powder liquid over the steel piece 10. Notch parts 44 are formed on the electrode parts 40 so as to correspondingly avoid the labels 14 preliminarily applied to the edge faces 10a of the steel piece 10. The electrode surfaces 42, which are opposed to the edge faces 10a of the steel piece 10, of the electrode parts 40 are formed in parallel to the edge faces 10a and brought into face contact with the parts exposed from the labels 14 of the edge faces 10a to be energized.
