A method and an apparatus for adaptive transmission and feedback in a multi-carrier communication system are provided to maximize system capacity and spectral performance by adjusting modulation and coding scheme(MCS), coding rate, training pilot pattern, TPC(Transmission Power Control) level and sub channel configuration jointly. In a communication method of an OFDM system, modulation scheme, coding rate, pilot pattern and training symbol, and power level are adapted. The adaptation process is performed in a transmitter and is based on channel state information. The transmitter generates control information indicating adaptation information. A control information signal includes a single index value indicator meaning adaptation details of modulation scheme, coding, training pilot and power level. The transmitter transmits the adapted signal and the control information signal independently or jointly. A receiver receives the adapted signal and the control information signal. The receiver looks up the adaptation details from a look-up table by using the index value. The receiver measures channel state on the basis of a received signal. Probing sequence is formed and/or channel quality information is computed by using the channel state measurement. |
