The present invention relates to a process for separating 2-butanol from tert-butanol/water mixtures obtained in the dissociation of tert-butanol (TBA) prepared from industrial C4-hydrocarbon mixtures into isobutene and water. The dissociation of industrial TBA or TBA/water azeotrope into isobutene and water leaves, after the isobutene formed has been separated off, a TBA/water mixture enriched in 2-butanol (SBA). Without removal of 2-butanol, this mixture is not suitable for preparing commercial TBA or TBA/water azeotrope. According to the invention, the mixture is firstly brought by addition of a TBA-containing stream to a water concentration which is less than the limit concentration of the distillation boundary line connecting the two azeotropes TBA/water and SBA/water and is subsequently worked up by distillation
