PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optical fiber preform easily realizing an optical fiber having a desired characteristic. SOLUTION: This method for producing an optical fiber preform comprises the steps of measuring refractive index distribution in the diameter direction of an intermediate preform for producing the optical fiber preform at each of a plurality of positions along the longitudinal direction of the intermediate preform, of defining a shape of the outer diameter of the intermediate preform based on the result of the step of measuring refractive index distribution so that the optical fiber preform capable of realizing the optical fiber having targeted characteristic is produced, of grinding the outer periphery of the intermediate preform so that the defined shape of the outer diameter is obtained, and of drawing the ground intermediate preform so that it has substantially a constant outer diameter.
