PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarized light separating element which can shorten time required to manufacture by lessening number of layers of a polarized light separating film or to raise light utilizing efficiency without increasing number of layers of the polarized light separating film too much. SOLUTION: A polarized light converting element includes the polarized light separating element 330 for separating incident light to two kinds of polarized light and a selective retardation plate 381 for converting one polarized light among two kinds of polarized light from the polarized light separating element to the other polarized light. The polarized light separating element 330 consists of columns respectively having cross sections of a parallelogram shape and includes a 1st transparent substrate and a 2nd transparent substrate which are alternatively adhered together. Further the polarized light separating film 20 and a reflection film 30 are alternatively arranged between the 1st transparent substrate and the 2nd transparent substrate.
