A digital broadcasting set top box for supporting a virtual machine environment based game is provided to receive various game contents based on a virtual machine through on-line or off-line media and execute the game contents. A digital broadcasting set top box includes a microprocessor(100) that receives a digital broadcasting signal and displays an image corresponding to the digital broadcasting signal on a TV monitor. The microprocessor controls games produced based on a virtual machine. The set top box further includes a memory(102), a key input unit(112), a network interface(104), and a game controller(114). The memory includes a ROM(Read Only Memory)(102a) storing a virtual machine application program accessing the games under the control of the microprocessor and a RAM(Random Access Memory)(102b) storing various virtual machine games. The key input unit includes a selection key for receiving the digital broadcasting signal or selecting execution of a game. The network interface includes an on-line receiver for downloading games from predetermined broadcasting media or Internet portal cites and an off-line receiver for receiving games from recording media. The game controller allows a user to control the game executed according to the access operation of the virtual machine application program.
