An organic electroluminescent device and a control method thereof are provided to extend the life time by restricting the temperature of pixels from increasing over a predetermined level. An organic electroluminescent device having a panel(100) including plural pixels includes a temperature sensor(150) positioned in the panel to detect the temperature of the panel, and a control unit(230) for controlling the output of a data driving unit(210) and a scan driving unit(220) connected to the panel to drive the pixels according to the detected temperature. The control unit stops the output of the scan and data driving units if the detected temperature is over a pre-set reference temperature value. The control unit makes the scan and data driving units output signals again if the detected temperature is below the pre-set reference temperature value.
