The hand rail, primarily for use in stairs and corridors, comprises a balustrade 10 defining a hollow tubular cavity 12 and, spaced along the balustrade, multiple mounting brackets 20 for mounting the balustrade to a support surface. At least one of the mounting brackets is provided with at least one light source 50 for emitting guiding light and a back up power supply 60 for the light source is provided within the hollow tubular cavity. Preferably all of the mounting brackets are provided with at least one light source, with the light sources preferably comprises LED lamps. Each mounting bracket preferably includes a cavity 42 for housing a light source along with a mounting plate 22 for mounting to the support surface and an arm 26 for holding the balustrade. The cavity is preferably shaped so that in use it directs light generally downwards. The hollow cavity of the balustrade preferably house a mains cable supply 36 with the back up power supply comprising a rechargeable battery arranged for recharging by a mains power supply. A scheduler for scheduling regular timed periods of operation of the back up power supply may also be included. |
