A vehicle headlamp has a reflector (10), bulb (12), a transparent plastic cover plate (22), a lens (16) and an infra red (IR) filter between the cover plate and reflector with a suitable coating (26). This is applied directly on to one side of the lens and reflects infra red light of such a wavelength that is absorbed by the material of the cover plate. In fact, the coating may be on the cover plate itself facing the lens and is made of indium-zinc oxide. It has a surface resistance of between two and sixteen ohms. The lens is made of glass.
