The machine frame (2) has a gathering station at a distance from the distal end (4) of the conveyor (3) for forming the load items (A) into a pallet layer (D). The station has a stop (9) for the units when they are transported by the conveyor from its distal end to its proximal end in a first direction (B) and it also has a stop for the gathered items when they are transported in a second direction at right angles to the first direction. The frame also includes a stacking station for transferring the pallet layer (D) onto a pallet (E). The conveyor is a driven one and at least part of it can be positioned inside the container.
