PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head for perpendicular magnetic recording that can reduce a data recording current and increase the track density of a recording medium, and also prevent a magnetic flux leakage due to skew effect or minimize the magnetic flux leak. SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording head, having a data recording section which has a main pole and a return pole and also has a coil enclosing the main pole, and a data reproduction section which includes magnetic shield layers and a magnetic device for reading between them, has a first portion where a lower end part of the main pole decreases in width downward and whose flank is a curved surface having a first curvature and a second portion which is an extended portion of the first portion and whose flank is a curved surface having a second curvature. The first and second curvatures are equal to or different from each other, and magnetic shield means are further provided on both the sides of the lower end part of the main pole.
