A system for monitoring the periphery of a vehicle, capable of extracting the outline of an obstacle even in a dark environment such as night without being affected by a shadow of the obstacle which shadow is created by light from a lighting device of the vehicle. A system for monitoring the periphery of a vehicle, where a view in the periphery of a vehicle is imaged by an imaging device (3) and information on an obstacle present in the periphery is given to a vehicle occupant by an annunciation device (6). A first illumination device (4) and/or a second illumination device (4) are provided on the vehicle. The first illumination device (4) emits light to a shadow of an obstacle which shadow is created in the imaging range of the imaging device (3) by light of the lighting device. The second illumination device (4) projects illumination light of a specific pattern into the imaging range of the imaging device (3) in order to specify the presence of the obstacle.
