PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable printer capable of uniformly registering indexes to be registered in a nonvolatile memory into a plurality of areas. SOLUTION: The portable printer is equipped with a printing section, a nonvolatile memory 26, counters C1 to C20 for counting the number of the indexes which are registered into divided n-areas for every area, the first registration means S3 for registering the index into a specific area if none of the indexes has been registered in the specific area when registering the index into the specific area of the nonvolatile memory, the second registration means S5, S3 for searching the area wherein the index has not been registered and writing the index of the specific area into the searched area and registering the index into the specific area if the index has been registered in the specific area and the third registration means S8, S3 for exchanging the index of the area having the smallest counted value of the counter with the one of the specific area and registering the index into the specific area after the exchanging if indexes have been registered into all areas.
