PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of executing stable stratified spark ignition operation in a light load operation area. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine is formed so that a combustion chamber 25 is divided into two spaces consisting of a higher part combustion chamber 25a and lower part combustion chamber 25b which are independent from each other when a piston 22 is on a top dead center position side from a predetermined position, and equipped with a fuel injection valve37 and an ignition plug 35 arranged so as to face the lower part combustion chamber. In the internal combustion engine, fuel is injected by a fuel injection valve at the latter half of a compression stroke so as to form a stratified mixture in the lower part combustion chamber, whereby more fuel can be collected in an area near the ignition plug. As a result, the stable stratified spark ignition operation can be executed in a light load operation area so that fuel consumption can be improved. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
