PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device lighting a lamp with proper power by precisely discriminating the kind of lamp even if the transient characteristics of the lamp are improved. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp lighting device is equipped with: a power inverter circuit to supply power to a high pressure discharge lamp by converting power from a dc power source; a lighting control circuit to control the power supply of the power inverter circuit; and a discharge lamp discriminating circuit to discriminate the kind of rated power of the discharge lamp by detecting various electric characteristics of the discharge lamp. High pressure discharge lamps having a plurality of kinds of rated power are used as load objects, and any one kind among them is connected to the discharge lamp lighting device to light it. The kind of the rated power of the connected high pressure discharge lamp is discriminated by the discharge lamp discriminating circuit from electric characteristics during the period in which the electric characteristics of the discharge lamp are stabilized, and on the basis of the discriminated result, the power supply of the power inverter circuit is controlled to light the connected high pressure discharge lamp.
