A method and an apparatus for performing the time correlation of defects discovered on hard discs are provided to record the generation of grown defects and the time when the grown defects are generated. An HDD(Hard Disc Drive) system(50) has a logic for performing the time correlation of grown defects. The HDD system(50) correlates the generation of the grown defects by using a time stamp, and performs the time correlation of the grown defects. If a read defect data command transmitted from a host processor(30) is received, the HDD system(50) returns time-correlated grown defect information to the host processor(30). The host processor(30) desirably executes a software program for processing the time correlation grown defect information to determine a change in the number of the generated grown defects as a time function.
