Continuous woodworking machine comprises drills (16) driven on longitudinal guides (12) on an upper carriage (10) that slides to and fro on transverse guides (9), the whole assembly being mounted on a lower carriage (6) that slides to and fro on longitudinal guides (5). The lower carriage is driven along a longitudinal working path synchronously with the workpiece (18) and then returned to its start position while the drills are advanced to engage the workpiece and then retracted. The drilling unit comprises several parallel drills. The drills are advanced and retracted with reciprocating spindles. The drills are horizontal. There are several drilling units, each with its own drive. At least one drilling unit can be moved to the vertical. The lower carriage operates as a linear motor. The lower carriage and drilling unit are controlled in response to sensors in the travel path of the workpiece. The machine includes downstream glue application and dowel insertion units.
