The fire-extinguisher comprises a vessel (1) contq. powder and a standpipe (7) extending at one end into the latter. The other end of the standpipe has a stop valve or tap outside the vessel, while the outlet from a gas cartridge (3) is connected to it. - The cartridge seal (6) is breakable. The cartridge outlet can be to a chamber (4) connected by a port (10) to the standpipe. Alternatively the connection between cartridge and standpipe can be above the level of the powder.
