PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten an unnecessary paper feeding time by driving a driving part for a return lever pushing back a paper sheet to a hopper in a thinning-out mode, in which a pushing back action is carried out for every several sheets, or in a non- thinning-out mode in which a push-back action is carried out for every paper sheet. SOLUTION: In a hopper 2, a tip side 11 is turned so as to pressure-contact the tip periphery of a paper sheet P toward a paper feed roller 1 when a paper feed action is carried out. Then, the paper sheet P is clamped between a separation pad 9 and the paper feed roller 1 so as to be conveyed and separated. In this case, a driving part 33 for a return lever 20 pushing back the paper sheet P to the hopper 2 is constructed of a can member 30 giving rotational force to the return lever 20, a driving motor 34 giving rotational force to a paper feed roller shaft 13, and a control unit 35 controlling the driving motor 34. In this way, control is carried so that a pushing back action by the return lever 20 is carried out for every sheet when only the paper P, which may be overlapped in conveyance or collapsed, is fed, while paper sheet P hardly overlapped or collapsed is fed in a thinning-out mode and a pushing back action is not carried out every time.
