<p>A liquid crystal material having self-polarization is filled between a glass substrate (2) formed with a common electrode (3) and an orientation film (11) and a glass substrate (4) formed with a pixel electrode (40) and an orientation film (12) to provide a liquid crystal layer (13). A liquid crystal material is used in which a maximum angle by an optical axis change by liquid crystal molecules when a voltage with one polarity is applied to the liquid crystal material is larger than 45 deg., and which satisfies the condition 2Ps × A > 5Clc × A when the magnitude of self polarization per unit area is Ps(nC/cm2), the electrode area of a pixel is A (cm2), and a liquid crystal capacity per unit area is Clc (nF/cm2). Accordingly, transmittance at a liquid crystal portion is increased to provide a good display even if a storage capacitor is not provided. Consequently a storage capacitor is not needed to increase the aperture ratio of a liquid crystal panel.</p>
