<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for exhaust emission control improved for removing hydrocarbon components from exhaust gases. <P>SOLUTION: This exhaust emission control device 10 comprises a silver carrying carrier 14 disposed in an exhaust gas flow passage 16 and an oxidation gas feed device 12 disposed on the upstream side thereof. In the exhaust emission control method, when the temperature of the silver carrying carrier is equal to or less than a predetermined temperature, the oxidation gas is supplied from the oxidation gas feed device to oxidize the silver of the silver carrying carrier. The exhaust emission control device 10 further comprises the silver carrying carrier 14 disposed in the exhaust gas flow passage and the oxidation gas feed device 12 disposed on the upstream side thereof.
