<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical connector which can protect a ferrule. <P>SOLUTION: The optical connector 10 has a ferrule 11 having a rear end face of a built-in fiber 11a to be connected to a top end face of an optical fiber 13a of a coated optical fiber 13 by a mechanical splice 14, wherein the ferrule 11 is encapsulated by a ferrule protection part 12 up to the top end and is not exposed to the outside. Thereby, the ferrule 11 is prevented from being damaged by collision during transporting or conveying. The mechanical splice 14 is protected by a mechanical splice protection part 15, and a housing 16 is externally fitted to the mechanical splice 14.
