PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a figure reading method which enables a reduction in storage capacity of dictionary data to read an indicated figure with high precision for reading measured values using a rotation top by an electronic camera. SOLUTION: A system using this figure reading method reads indicating figures on a meter acquiring figures of "0" to "9" mentioned on surroundings side of a rotation top and comparing them with dictionary data of figure images stored beforehand. The images acquired by an electronic camera are extracted as the images within the range of prescribed comparison for every digits of indicating figures, and the degree of movement of the figure from the position where one figure is indicated within the range of the comparison after rotation of the rotation top stops is detected from the extracted image. The dictionary data memorizes images developing figures mentioned on the rotation top, the image within the range of the comparison corresponding to the degree of movement of a figure is extracted in order for every figures from the dictionary data. This system reads the figure whose matching rate is highest, comparing the images extracted from dictionary data with the images acquiring by the electronic camera and extracted.
