PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ion generator capable of restricting polarity of ions by adding a small number of components, low in the cost of the added components and power consumption in the added components, miniaturizable and capable of saving energy. SOLUTION: In this ion generator, an A.C. voltage generated by a high voltage generation circuit including a transformer 6 is applied to a discharge electrode 7; and positive ions or negative ions are generated from the discharge electrode 7 when an instantaneous voltage of the applied A.C. voltage is above a voltage capable of generating discharge on the positive side or the negative side. The ion generator is provided with adjustment means 8 and 9 for adjusting one or both of respective resonance frequencies of a primary circuit 2, 4 and a secondary circuit 5, 7 of the transformer 6; and is so structured that an instantaneous voltage above the voltage capable of generating discharge is fixed to either of the positive side and the negative side by the adjustment means 8 and 9.
