A thermal image forming apparatus is provided to prevent media from jamming at a process of supplying the media between a TPH(Thermal Print Head) and a platen roller by moving the platen roller to an opposite side from a transfer unit. In a thermal image forming apparatus, a TPH(51) moves to an open position separated from the platen roller(52) and to a contact position being in contacted with the platen roller. A transfer unit(40) transfers the media(10). And a moving element moves the platen roller in a direction going away from the transfer unit when the TPH is moved from the contact position to the open position.
