A driving apparatus and a driving method of a backlight are provided to prevent malfunctioning of a shutdown circuit caused by a subtle change of a detection voltage by sequentially and accumulatively storing a detection voltage corresponding to a current supplied to lamps in response to a clock signal using a register and an operation circuit, and calculating the accumulatively stored voltages to generate a shutdown signal. A plurality of lamps(110) each have first and second electrodes. A transformer(120) supplies a high voltage AC(altering current) waveform to the lamps for driving thereof. A detection circuit(130) generates a detection voltage corresponding to a high voltage AC waveform outputted to the lamps from the transformer. An accumulative operator(150) accumulates the detection voltage from the detection circuit for each clock signal, and generates a shutdown signal for shutting down the lamps using the accumulated voltage. A controller(140) converts input power to an AC waveform to supply the waveform to the transformer, and shuts down the lamps in response to the shutdown signal.
