The invention relates to mountain tunnelling and can be used for building water discharges on hydraulic power stations and for constructing vehicle roads and railways in mountains. The inventive method consists in creating in a face conditions which enable oxides of chemical elements, substantially forming rocks, to chemically react with graphite for melting said rocks. For this purpose, the rocks in the face are heated in such a way that high temperatures are produced by transfer of electric arc energy through the metal of a tunnelling system head wall, wherein said electric arc is obtained between electrodes inside discharge chambers placed on the internal surface of the tunnelling system head wall. A current is supplied to the electrodes via a graphite mass which is displaced along electrical insulated tubes. The graphite heated in the discharge chamber by passing through the hollow electrodes is introduced into the face through nozzles embodied in the tunnelling system head wall. Said invention enables to control the power of a current feeding the electric arc in the discharge chambers and the graphite mass, thereby making it possible to select required tunnelling modes.
