PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply producing a high-purity polyphenylene oxide by a reaction of a phenol derivative as a raw material using an enzymatic catalyst. SOLUTION: The method for producing a polyphenylene oxide comprises a first process for subjecting a compound represented by general formula (1) (R is a 1-3C alkyl group) to a polymerization reaction in the presence of an enzymatic catalyst to give a reaction product and a second process for extracting the reaction product with acetone in which the polyphenylene oxide has repeating units represented by general formula (2) (R is a 1-3C alkyl group) and formula (3) (R is a 1-3C alkyl group) and the number of the repeating units represented by general formula (2) is≥6 times as much as that of the repeating units represented by general formula (3).
