PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering gear of rolling contact type formed with a rack and pinion capable of suppressing generation of noises and enhancing the maneuvering stability of a vehicle. SOLUTION: The rack and pinion type steering gear 10 is equipped with a pinion 11 coupled with a steering shaft, a rack bar 12 to mesh with the pinion 11, and a rack guide 14 fitted with a metal roller 16 rolling on the back face of the rack shaft 12 and supporting the rack bar 12 through the metal roller 16, wherein the metal roller 16 is structured so that an elastic body 32 is attached fast to one part of the rolling surface 29 of the roller 16 and contacts with the back face of the rack bar 12 by the metal portion of the rolling surface 29 and the elastic body 32.
