A composite vaccine for the immunization of dogs or foxes against distemper, Hepatitis contagiosa canis and leptospirosis comprises a mixture of inactivated Hepatitis contagiosa canis virus, distemper virus and cultures of killed Leptospira canicola and killed Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae destroyed by freezing at a low temperature e.g. -35 DEG C. The vaccine is prepared by mixing (a) Hepatitis contagiosa canis virus obtained by extraction from liver and/or spleen of dogs or from tissue cultures, inactivation with formaldehyde and removal or excess formaldehyde with a quantity of an acid salt of sulphurous acid amounting to 150 to 200% of the stoichiometric quantity; (b) a suspension of an apathogenic distemper virus obtained by cultivating a pathogenic distemper virus in at least 50 successive passages in a tissue culture of organs from animals susceptible to distemper; and (c) culture suspensions of killed Leptospira canicola and killed Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae destroyed by freezing at a low temperature. The suspensions (c) are produced by cultivating the micro organisms for 6 to 10 days at 28 DEG C. in a medium containing 10% of rabbit serum. The mixed vaccine may be incorporated with an injectable carrier such as a phosphate buffer of pH 7.6. Specifications 904,301, 931,137 and 971,724 are referred to.
|
