A method and a kit for diagnosing or prognosing susceptibility to develop type 2 diabetes, the metabolic syndrome, sub clinical atherosclerosis, myocardial infarct, stroke or clinical manifestations of diabetes in a subject. The method comprises detecting and quantifying the amount of bound protein (s), (apoCIII, apoCI , apoAl or apoE) on small dense low density lipoproteins (sdLDL) particles in a blood sample from said subject.
