[Also in Group XXXVI] In an altimeter (see Group XXXVI), an ionization chamber comprises an enclosed space formed by metal end caps 1, 2, sealed to a glass ring 6 and carrying an electrode 3 in the form of a metal stud and an electrode 4 in the form of a metal foil coated with an ionizing source e.g. a source of alpha particles such as radium. A guard ring 7, which may be plated on the glass, is provided and the space is open to the atmosphere at 9. Such a device is equivalent to a capacitor shunted by a resistor variable in accordance with the air pressure.</p> |
