The method involves monitoring vehicle environment for an approaching obstacle, and outputting a warning signal if predetermined conditions are fulfilled, during the approach of the obstacle. The fulfillment of the condition requires that an intention to open a door (16) is detected from the signal of a proximity sensor, which detects the approaching of the hand to a vehicle door-inner handle (20) before contacting of the handle. An independent claim is also included for a warning device for warning the occupants of a vehicle before approaching the obstacles.
