PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of performing image forming operation in a state where a phase is correctly detected/adjusted without performing phase detecting operation while rotating a photoreceptor in a period from receiving a printing request from a user until starting the image forming operation. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with a phase detecting means for detecting the phases of the respective photoreceptors and a phase adjusting means for adjusting so that the phases of the respective photoreceptors may have predetermined phase relation to each other, and forms an image by superposing and transferring respective toner images formed on the respective photoreceptors whose phases are adjusted to have the predetermined phase relation by the phase adjusting means and which are driven and rotated while keeping the relation to a transfer medium. In the image forming apparatus, the phase detecting means detects the phases of the respective photoreceptors as an absolute phase angle by an absolute type rotary encoder when the respective photoreceptors are stopped.
