PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine reducing noise in self-ignition operation in a high load operational area. SOLUTION: In this internal combustion engine, when a piston 22 is closer to a top dead center position side than a predetermined position, a combustion chamber 25 is split into two spaces of a high combustion chamber 25a and a low combustion chamber 25b which are independent from each other, a ratio VH0/VH1 of a high combustion chamber volume when the piston is at a top dead center position with respect to that when the piston is at the predetermined position is set to be larger than a ratio VL0/VL1 of a low combustion chamber volume when the piston is at a top dead center position with respect to that when the piston is at the predetermined position. Therefore, self-ignition of fuel mixture in the high combustion chamber is performed, and then self-ignition of mixture gas in a low combustion chamber is performed after a lapse of a predetermined time. The noise along with combustion can be reduced in this invention, compared with a case where self-ignition of fuel mixture in the combustion chamber 25 is performed all together.
