<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to continue printing even when the rotation abnormality of a rotary developing unit is detected in printing, and when the rotation abnormality is frequently generated, to warn a user about the rotation abnormality while performing printing operation. <P>SOLUTION: A color image forming apparatus for obtaining a color copy by repeating a process for transferring an electrostatic latent image formed on a photoreceptor drum 3 to a transfer member by intermittently rotating a rotary developing unit holder 2 by a stepping motor which is not shown in the figure in each color, where when a detection signal is not outputted from a position sensor 11 for detecting the stop of a developing roller for each color in the rotary developing unit on a prescribed position, in prescribed timing due to the racing of the position sensor 11 and the stepping motor, the rotational speed of the stepping motor is reduced down to a prescribed rotational speed to prepare a color copy even when the stepping motor is raced.
