Operating method comprises optimally adjusting cutting air and/or immersion depth of a circular knife shearing machine for strips having unequal thickness over the strip length during the method. An independent claim is also included for a shearing machine operated by the above method. Preferred Features: The cutting air and the immersion depth are optimally adjusted during the operating method. The cutting air is always adjusted to an optimum value depending on the changing strip thickness by sliding the knife shaft electrically, hydraulically or by using piezoelectric elements.
